The 8 Wonders Of Kansas

Eisenhower Center PhotoThe twenty-four finalists for The 8 Wonders Of Kansas have been selected. Voting is open at http://www.8wonders.org until December 31, 2007.

Perhaps to someone not from Kansas, some of these finalists might seem silly.

Yes. It’s a big ball of twine. Not that big of a deal I guess, but if you tell someone you are from Kansas, after the compulsory “Wizard Of Oz” comment, is the ball of twine.

There are other things I would have liked to have seen make the finalist list. Things near and dear to my heart and near my home. Coronado Heights and Rolling Hills Zoo would have been nice.

There are some things that I would not have added. The Brookville Hotel has never really impressed me much.

Cheyenne Bottoms/Quivira National Wildlife Refuge? Well, I always see beautiful photographs of the place. I guess I’m never there at the right time.

John Steuart Curry mural at State Capitol, Topeka I’m happy to see “The Garden of Eden” in Lucas get onto the list. It certainly fits most of the thesaurus matches for the word ‘wonder’ I think. I marvel at why anyone would produce such an oddity.

The Big Well has of course become a wonder within a wonder. The devastating tornado that ripped through Greensburg, Kansas this year has taken the museum but the well is of course still there.
I hope you vote for your favorites. Even if you don’t vote, at least you might find a good idea for a Saturday road trip around the state. I’ve never seen the Gyp Hills. I think I’ll fill up the tank and take a drive.

My top eight in no particular order are.

  1. Ball of Twine
  2. Big Well
  3. Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center
  4. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve & the Flint Hills
  5. Garden of Eden
  6. Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum
  7. Big Brutus
  8. Kansas Underground Salt Museum
