Gillian Gibbons, a teacher from Great Britain, who had been a teacher in one of Sudan’s most prestigious schools was sentenced to 15 days in prison and deportation for “insulting Islam”.
Ms. Gibbons was teaching a group of seven year old children about animals. She was using a Teddy Bear as a teaching aid. Each student was to take the animal home for a night as part of their class project. When Ms. Gibbons asked the seven year old Muslim children to come up with a name for the Teddy. The almost unanimous decision was to name it, yes, “Muhammad”.
The Sudanese court decided that this was an insult to Islam and convicted Ms. Gibbons to 15 days in jail and deportation. Luckily for the Sudanese government, they were able to put all of their energies into making this conviction.
